Acceptable Forms of ID

In order to have a document notarized in California, you will need to appear in person and present your notary with a hard copy of your ID (no photocopies are permitted). Here are the forms of ID we are able to accept...

  • US Passport book or card

  • Foreign Passport, endorsed by USCIS

  • CA Driver's License, ID or Senior ID issued by CA DMV

  • Other State Driver's License or ID

  • Mexico or Canada Driver's License

  • California State employee ID card

  • Employee ID from any city/county within California

  • US Military ID (only if includes signature)

  • Inmate ID issued by California Dept. of Corrections

ID Requirements

  • must be either current or issued within the past 5 years of the notarization date

  • must have an identifying number (serial number)

  • must contain a photo and physical description

  • must contain your signature

  • name on ID must match the name on the document

Unacceptable Forms of ID

  • Expired ID, unless it was issued in the last 5 years

  • Birth Certificates

  • Social Security Cards

  • Credit Cards

  • Temporary Driver's License

  • Any acceptable ID where the name does NOT match the document
