Personal appearance is required
Under California law, every signer must personally appear before the notary at the time of the notarization. This means that the signer and the notary must both be physically present, face to face in the same room, when the notarization takes place. This protects the signer, employer and others from potential fraud — and the notary from potential liability.
A few states permit the personal appearance requirement to be satisfied by webcam over the internet. This is not allowed for California Notaries.
Personal appearance also allows the Notary to complete other steps in a proper notarization.
